Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all the upgraded perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive dependent on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the number of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item.

It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average item level is listed on the character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the item level. It's a useful indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it's able to deal. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller can be done using the level of the item.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are many theories about the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory says that the item level is determined by formulas that determine how valuable an item's stats really are. It considers the fact that various perks have different value and sockets have gems that increase the value of the item overall. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

This is not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item upgrade was dropped may alter its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher value.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modification which are then boosted by the player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. An item that is white or grey for instance, can only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with higher costs.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes could provide the item additional damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.

Presently, all affixes are able to be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by the arrows that circle. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and other items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other rerolling options.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it is a unique item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item basis and the item compare interface wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the likelihood of locating items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is particularly advantageous in the early game, since players tend to prioritize weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of completing the upgrade successfully, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an item can be affected by the luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item with Luck increases this chance by five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
