WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for the latter due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item upgrades that is used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can be used to create Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and is accessible anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current level of the item being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade tools, armor, weapon, and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next upgrade level, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available at the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with numerous new features added. Once the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level upgrade - Mariskamast`s latest blog post - level will cost less. This is even if the items come from a different set of equipment.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced as well, but is only available once certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players have a variety of options for upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be used on equipment that is of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade item path. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade can require up to 20 crests, contingent on the type or equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for gear that is used in the endgame. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Using these new currencies isn't too difficult however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment you have and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to make. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up several slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
