Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant differences from earlier versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out."
