Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Typically, items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while objects with strong bases, such as eth titans aren't affected much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or extra impact when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, retrieved as loot by enemies, or gotten from chests or missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade item.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials needed do not.
