Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like PvE damage and crit chance.

Components

Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to make stronger versions of the equipment that require the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to alter the defense or attack characteristics of a weapon or armor. These upgrades can be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of the item will be available during the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue improving their equipment even if they're uncertain of how much it will improve after a future reset.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade components that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs buff the power of all nodes within the area around them and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.

You will often find in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best way to upgrade your gear. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded directly to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to get higher nodes much faster.

Glyphs, the sole upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and replaced again are the most commonly used. The only exception is legendary equipment, which requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can decide to replace it with another Glyph with the same rank or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt has a chance to drop one of the numerous Glyphs, and there are also a few rare glyphs that can be found in the form of drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.
